Fort Worden State Park, Washington

Many of you have probably spent time at Fort Worden, so you know what a cool place it is. For those who haven't yet, we'll share a few pics from this weekend at the park in our teardrop.

Fort Worden State Park is (ironically) on the grounds of the historic Fort Worden--an Army installation constructed between 1898 and 1920, and in use as a military facility from 1902 to 1953. It consititued one third of the "triangle of fire," a strategic system of three forts with huge armaments designed to defend the Puget Sound from any kind of hostile attack. The forts were never engaged in battle, but many of the facilites and the huge guns are still in place. (You can read a little more about its past and present HERE.

Fort Worden is also the filming locations for the movies "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), and "The Ring" (2002).

We knew it'd be a cold campout this weekend, but per our monthly custom, we went anyway. Here are some pics of the trip:

As with any trip to the Olympic Peninsula...ferry travel is involved (unless you want to take the long way around and south through Tacoma, and across the toll bridge).

Crossing the Hood Canal

Our campsite for the weekend. There were very few others in the campground, and the water for each site was shut off for the winter in the event it might freeze.

We didn't have a ton of time to do anything the evening we got there, so this is an early pot of coffee on the next morning. First things first!

Here are a few random pics of the buildings in Fort Worden, proper...

Um, can we chat about the name of this RV in the campground??

All in all, a fun, cold, wet, sunny, interesting, too short trip.
